Much of my work begins with a moment of rapid, instinctive creation. I draw quickly, often from something happening in front of me — a musician playing, a figure moving, a presence encountered in a particular place. I try not to interrupt that first response by correcting it.

What interests me is what happens afterwards: how that fleeting moment can be crystallised without losing the energy that produced it.

That impulse has taken me through drawing, sculpture, painting, film and, more recently, the spoken voice. The materials change, but the attraction remains much the same: to catch something alive before it disappears, and give it a form in which it can remain.
